    My father opened Independent Jewelers Market in 1986 on Hylan Boulevard next to Café Luna. When I took over Casale Jewelers in 2009, business was slow. My dad suggested I run an ad in the Staten Island Advance for a free watch battery, which I did. The problem was I didn’t limit it to one per customer, so many senior men brought in 10 watches each, and some got upset when I refused to change them all for free.

    During the early 1900s, our predecessor organization, known as the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin for the Protection of Homeless and Destitute Children, was the second-largest orphanage in the United States, second only to Boys Town. It was basically a self-sustaining small city.
