Business on the Green: The Chamber of Commerce’s 26th Golf Outing

Rosalie Fazio - June 12, 2012

On Wednesday, June 6th, LaTourrette Golf Course welcomed local businesses to the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce’s 26th Annual Richard B. Irwin Memorial Golf Outing. An all-day affair, Chamber members were able to relax and interact with each other on a beautiful June day free from rain.

This year, 122 members from local businesses attended the golf outing, which lasted from 12pm-8pm. However, the Chamber put its own spin on a typical day on the golf course. Incentives such as a hole-in-one prize, a “beat-the-kid” contest, trophies for the longest drive, closest-to-the-pin, and other contests induced friendly competition and teamwork strategies.

Scattered throughout the course, there were “member spotlights,” in which members showcased their specialties and offered edible samples for all to try. Members were welcomed at registration by the Staten Island Winery’s Wine Tasting. At hole 3 on the golf course, players tried a savory hanger steak canapé with marrownaise and polished it off with a sweet coconut rum cocktail from Rick’s Café. Further along at holes 7 and 10, The Lake Club offered pasta with short ribs in a Merlot sauce, while Edible Arrangements gave a fruit tasting. Hole 14 had Mango Chicken Salad from Qdoba Mexican Grill, a perfect accompaniment to Beso’s “Island Famous” sangria. For dessert, Dominick’s Bakery and Café provided cookies.

When the day was done and the golfers were tired from a full day of playing, they were treated to a “kick off the summer” dinner BBQ. With delicious food to refuel them and an open bar to keep them hydrated, the attendees were able to kick back and mingle with one another.

Each year, the golf outing is a major fundraiser for the Chamber. It attracts businesses from all four boroughs as well as New Jersey. This tradition is one of the many perks of being a Chamber member. It fosters a sense of community among local businesses and gives them the opportunity to take a break from their daily routine.
