Business Tip of the Week: Chalky Pastels

Sonny Golden, Golden Key Interiors, Business Guild II - May 15, 2012

Warm weather is coming.  It’s all about creating comfortable, classic looks. Chalky pastels are a perfect jumping-off point to achieve that. Spinach white from Sherwin Williams, Raspberry ice from Benjamin Moore, filtered sunlight from Ace Hardware, inviting warmth from Glidden, and mild mint from Olympic are all examples of chalky pastels that are being used today. Knowing how to choose the right pastels, as well as what to pair them with, is the key to making them fabulous.

Do this comparison before committing to a pastel: Grab a white paint chip and a gray chip, then put the pastel swatch you’re considering against them. It is leans towards the white, the pastel most likely will be too sweet. Stick with pastels that have gray undertones. To prevent a room from looking like a box of sidewalk chalk, don’t use more than two chalky pastels together.

Walls are the perfect home for pastels. They will be light and airy and will visually expand the room. Toughen them up with dark accents or furniture with unexpected finishes such as lacquer or distressed metal. Pastels are no longer just for kids. With a bit of gray in them, these soft but not overly sweet hues have grown- up appeal.
