Staten Island Children’s Museum Announces Con Edison Second Saturday Science! Fall Weekend Workshop Schedule

Jennifer Dudley, Staten Island Children's Museum - October 9, 2018

October 9, 2018 - The Staten Island Children’s Museum will share biology, engineering and graphic design concepts with curious young minds during the Con Edison Second Saturday Science! weekend workshops in fall 2018.

The monthly one-hour Children’s Museum drop-in activity focuses on scientific exploration to engage children’s minds and imaginations. The workshops are often aligned with the particular month’s programming theme and are interactive, giving kids the chance to experiment, build and create. All sessions are from Noon – 1:00 pm and are free with admission.

Here are the upcoming Con Edison Second Saturday Science! workshops for the rest of 2018:

  • October 13 – The Science of Sight: As the Children’s Museum’s programs are focused on National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October, visitors will learn about braille and will create their own braille name tags. The workshop will explore Daltonism, also known as colorblindness, through a series of experiments and tests.

  • November 10 – Soaring to New Heights: Celebrating Native American Heritage is the theme for the month, and the workshop will feature the life and work of Mary Golda Ross, the first Native American female aeronautical engineer. Children will make their own hovercrafts as they learn about this pioneer in her field.

  • December 8: Pixelate Me!: It’s time for fun and winter holidays. In the December workshop, kids will get to use Perler beads and create their own pixelated artwork inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of many popular Nintendo video games.

Con Edison, a longtime community partner, generously sponsors Second Saturday Science! as well as many of the Children’s Museum’s STEAM-themed “pop-up” programs. Con Edison also supports the Children’s Museum “Science Time” Program, held every day in the Museum’s exhibits. During this program, kids get an interactive lesson in a variety of topics, including climates, animals and their habitats, energy, and architecture.

“We are grateful for the continued and generous support of Con Edison, which allows us to bring these programs to our young scientists,” said Dina Rosenthal, Executive Director of the Staten Island Children’s Museum. “These workshops and daily programs support a key aspect of our mission, which is to demonstrate vividly that learning can be exciting and fun. Based on the participation in these programs and the feedback we’ve received, we know our guests agree that it is!”
