Judging takes place for the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce 2016 Annual Building Awards for Excellence in Design & Construction

Joyce Venezia Suss - October 31, 2016

A panel of expert judges recently toured a variety of new and renovated residential and commercial properties throughout Staten Island in preparation for the annual Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Building Awards program on Friday, Dec. 2. The Building Awards program is sponsored by National Grid and Kamco Supply Corp.

The Building Award judges represent a cross section of several building-related industries. Applicants submitted for new construction, renovations, alternations/additions, and historical renovations. Judging categories included exterior, interior, interior decorating, outdoor space, specialty craftsmanship and green space.
Discretionary awards may be presented this year, recognizing special features such as green design, historical renovation, neighborhood improvement or adaptive reuse.
The winner/s of the Chairman’s Award (for excellence in exterior, interior, interior decorating and outdoor space) will be announced at the awards luncheon. Nominees include Casa Belvedere, several medical buildings, and Tiki Island/Lost Day Club.
The Building Awards program, now in its 55th year, was redesigned this year to acknowledge the building and design industries' ability to adapt to the diversity of Staten Island's growing population. The revised program expanded the variety of entries “to recognize projects that may not have fit our categories in the past, including buildings that have been repurposed, or a project that helps revitalize a neighborhood,” according to Chamber President Linda Baran.
A new online application was also introduced this year. Entries were submitted by project owners, architects/engineers, builders, general contractors, certified interior designers, interior decorators, craftsmen, and landscape contractors/designers.
A new judging format was also introduced this year, giving the industry expert judges greater flexibility in recognizing the various attributes of each property.
The Chamber's Building Awards Committee is chaired by Lana Seidman of NARI-HIC and Alfred Saulo of AVS Architects, who oversee committee members Mary Ellen Bongailas of Northfield Bank; Claire Bisignano Chesnoff, owner of Claire Properties; interior designer Marcia Caruselle; architect Anselmo Genovese; Ronit Lapid of Designer Touch Interiors; and Holly Wiesner Oliveri of Holly's Staten Island Buzz.
This year’s judges were committee members Saulo, Caruselle, Chesnoff, Lapid, Seidman, Yetman and Olivieri, as well as Glen Cutrona of Cutrona Architecture PLLC; Joseph Gobin of the New York City Parks Department; Robert Englert from the Borough President's office; Laura Fitzsimmons Volsario of Gateway Arms Realty; Mike Veneziale of Statwood Home Improvements; Debra Monte of The Green Inspector; and Murray Berman of Heritage Hill Homes.
The Awards Luncheon will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 at the Hilton Garden Inn, with Lonnie Quinn of CBS returning as program emcee. Tickets for the luncheon are available through the Chamber's website at or by phone at 718-727-1900. Tickets are $60 per person for Chamber members; $85 for non-members.
