Grimm is asked to support Commuter Toll Fairness Act

Linda M. Baran, SILIVE.Com - March 8, 2011

Dear Congressman Grimm:

On behalf of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, our 900 members and their 20,000 employees, I am writing to ask that you support the Residential and Commuter Toll Fairness Act of 2011 (HR 792) by becoming a co-sponsor.

As you are no doubt aware, Staten Island residents face the longest commute times in the nation and 6 percent of all the tolls collected in the U.S. come from Staten Island.

If Richmond County were a state, it would rank as the sixth-highest tolled state in the country. For this reason, Staten Island residents receive a discount when crossing the bridges.

However, this discount is currently being challenged as unconstitutional. Federal legislation is necessary to ensure that the discount is not overturned by the courts.

I know we can count on you to protect the interests of your Staten Island constituents and cosponsor this important bill.

If you would like further information about this issue, please feel free to contact my Director of Government Affairs, Geoff Kravitz. Thank you for your support on this critical issue.
