S.I. Mall Begins Shoplifters Shame Campaign
NY1 - December 8, 2010Prosecutors on Staten Island are hoping that public shaming will discourage would-be shoplifters.
Electronic monitors across the Staten Island Mall are once again displaying the mug shots of repeat offenders convicted of petty larceny this holiday season.
The 15 second advertisement will air through the holidays, every six minutes, on 11 digital advertising boards throughout the mall.
"It was pretty amazing how many people knew the people that were on the screens," said one Staten Island resident.
"I think it's a good idea cause this way people will be aware of people that shop in the store and they'll have their mug shots plastered in the store so that way they'll be aware of when the person walks in," said another.
"We want, we want, we want and sometimes that's why people wind up shoplifting," said a third.
Officials say more than 250 people have been banned from the mall for theft-related crimes this year.
