After Business Community Pressure, MTA Approves Modified Toll Hikes
SICC - November 4, 2010On September 16, the MTA held a public hearing at the St. George Theatre to get feedback on their plan to increase tolls and fares. The business community was well represented with testimony from P.A.C. Plumbing, Atlantic Salt, Mid Island Car Service and the Chamber. Click here to read the Chamber’s testimony. At the hearing, Borough President Molinaro suggested that raising the tolls for cash users, and maintaining the current rate for E-ZPass users would generate an additional $90 million for the MTA. Board member Allen Capelli found merit in the idea and presented it to the MTA Board. Although the Chamber advocated against any toll increase, the board approved a modified version of the Borough President's proposal. Beginning December 30, 2010, cash users will pay 18% more while E-ZPass users will only see their bill increase by 5%. Click here to view the new toll rates.
